Scottsboro and Jackson County residents have come together for "Trade Days" over 100 years to barter, buy and swap goods. The newest attraction is the 50,000 sq ft Unclaimed Baggage Center with clothes, rare violins, and even an Egyptian mummy's tomb.
  
Another area attraction is the Battle of Bridgeport, the largest Civil War reenactment in the state.
  
The Russell Cave National Monument, once the home of pre-historic Indians, was established in 1961. Nearby Blowing Wind Cave Wildlife Refuge consists of upland hardwoods and limestone rock outcrops. Blowing Wind Cave itself is not open to the public due to the potential for disturbance of federally endangered gray bats.
    
Some portions of the refuge are open and a major attraction is when the bats emerge from the cave an hour near dusk in June-August.
 
Scottsboro also boasts an $18 million high school. Jackson County and Scottsboro school systems rank in the top 15% of the state's schools. Northeast Alabama Community College meets local higher education needs.
